French Jacket Class

April 27-May 3, 2026

9AM - 5:30PM

Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

This 7 day class, taught by Mary Funt will take you through the steps to create your own designer French jacket.

Prior to class, I’ll draft a custom fitted muslin toile from measurements you provide. I’ve found in prior classes that considerable time is spent on this process and decided to simplify it. On the first day, I will tweak the fit of your muslin jacket and provide you with a custom drafted pattern. The fitted toile and paper pattern are yours to keep.

Once the fit is perfected, you’ll lay out, cut and shape the fabric to achieve a perfect match along the princess seams. I have created a method of shaping the jacket sections to avoid an odd looking mismatch along the princess seams. After shaping, the boucle is quilted to the lining before assembling the jacket. You will receive a downloadable 100-plus page construction manual which explains the French jacket construction process.

We will also explore possible modifications such as adding a stand collar, zipper closure, sleeve vent variations or V-neckline.  Front closure options include covered hooks and eyes, customized zippers or handworked buttonholes. I will also demonstrate several methods for creating custom trim to perfectly match your jacket. Contact me prior to class for suggestions as to additional supplies if you are interested.

Our workspace is large which allows for individual tables, cutting tables and pressing stations equipped with professional tools. I have loaner machines complete with waking foot available if you don’t want to travel with a machine. Please let me know if you wish to reserve a machine when you book the class. Several sergers are also available. Please bring your own personal tools such as scissors, pins, etc.

This class is also an opportunity to complete a previously started French jacket. Many students have partially completed jackets and would love some assistance finishing.

An extensive manual describing the construction techniques will be emailed to you after final payment (one month before class). You can download the manual to your computer/iPad or print it out. Bring to class for reference.

Specialized sewing notions and couture buttons will be available for purchase during class.

The class will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel, 4431 PGA Blvd., Palm Beach Gardens, FL. We have a large conference room which will be available 24/7 to students who wish to work early or late. You can stay at the DoubleTree or another of the multiple hotels nearby. A grocery store and plus several restaurants are located across the street.

Complete and sign the Class Contact Form located at the bottom of the Classes drop down menu.

Cost of the 7 day workshop is $2175.00 ($2100.00 if final payment is by check). A $400.00 deposit will secure your spot. Payment in full is due by March 27, 2026. Cancellations prior to March 27 will receive a full refund minus a $50 fee. Your payment may be applied in full to another class if you wish.

There are no refunds for cancellations after March 27, 2026 unless I am able to fill your place in class.
